The ViewNottingham Review
Britain’s second most famous Portuguese import behind Cristiano Ronaldo has opened a second branch on Angel Row.
Unfortunately it doesn’t quite possess enough skill to break into the city’s premier league of restaurants. The VenueThe rustic, timber setting of other branches nationwide has been replaced with a minimalist brushstroke of glass and chrome and the feel of authentic Portuguese cuisine has been wiped away with it.
The PeopleHave you eaten at Nando's before? This is the question you're asked at the door. Those yet to experience the phenomenon may take some adjusting to the way things are done.
Don’t expect a waiter to come to take your order. Instead you peruse the menu before heading up to the counter to give your table number and your order before they bring it to you.
Nando’s is halfway between a restaurant and a fast food joint, creating a very relaxed and informal atmosphere. Perfect for what is essentially an indoor barbecue.
The only problem is that this particular branch seems ashamed of its roots. Its attempt to masquerade as posh contemporary dining undoes all the good work of the rest of the Nando’s brand. After all, what's the point of delicious finger food if you feel too embarrassed to get stuck in and lick your fingers afterwards?
The FoodIf you're familiar with Nando’s you know the drill. The menu doesn't differ from the standard formula of piri-piri flavoured chicken, served in a number of different ways with a few side dishes for good measure.
Despite this initially surprising lack of choice, all the dishes on the menu hit the spot. The majority of your meal is flame-grilled to perfection before hitting the plate and the results are a delight for anyone that's a fan of the unique chargrilled flavour.
The distinction between dishes is how you want your meal seasoned (unless your mouth is made of asbestos or you are used to hot food, beware of anything hotter than medium) and the side dishes that go with it. The choice isn’t extensive with rice the best accompaniment, but you can order chips (if you must) or a fresh green salad.
Vegetarian options are available but almost seemed frowned upon as their menu offers endless chicken options.
The DrinkBottomless fizzy drinks with unlimited refills are always a popular option, especially to keep the kids happy or to help the adults correct the mistake of being brave (read: foolish) enough to go for the spiciest seasoning.
For those looking for something a bit stronger there is a small, but perfectly formed, selection of wines. A very respectable Portuguese bottle of red costs just under £11 or there are bottled beers, including a couple of fine cervejas from Nando’s homeland.
The Last WordIt would be hard for anyone to try a Nando’s meal and not enjoy it – but do yourself a favour, try Nottingham’s first branch at the Cornerhouse and get the authentic Latin aura thrown in for free.
