The ViewNottingham Review
One of Nottingham’s best kept secrets, Charde Oriental is a true taste of Asia situated away from the hubbub of Nottingham’s bustling town centre.
The Venue
Melton Road, Tollerton, in the heart of the Nottinghamshire countryside, is hardly the place you expect to find an extremely well-presented and top-notch Chinese and Thai restaurant.
Originally converted from a local gastro pub, the facade can be quite deceptive as once you step through the front door you are surrounded by Oriental decorations and artwork.
The People
You get a sense of pride in this restaurant and the staff are courteous and prompt, while the authentic decor sets the scene for the meal to come. There is ample seating and it doesn't feel cramped.
It attracts a mixed bag of customers, ranging from large groups of six to eight through to couples having a romantic dinner.
The Food
The menu is wide-ranging and caters to all tastes with an extensive vegetarian section followed by Japanese, Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, Vietnamese and a host of traditional English dishes. You're spoilt for choice.
When the starters of Malaysian vegetable satay on skewer’s (£4) arrive they are well-presented and the food is fresh and appetising and the flavours are a treat for the taste buds.
Braised Chinese mushrooms and seasonal greens served (£5) with egg fried rice (£2.90) is equally as exquisite as the starters. The food is hot with the mushrooms full flavour shining through making this a recommended choice. There is also a set menu, which is more than enough for the largest of appetites.
The Drinks
The bar is fully stocked with the usual host of wines and spirits along with draught lager and chilled beers. A pint of Fosters will set you back around £2.80, while the house wine white/red is £3.25 for a small glass and the spirits range from £2.30 upwards and extra for a mixer.
The Last Word
One of Nottingham’s best kept secrets, with a large selection of authentic food cooked to an exceptional standard. It all takes place in a friendly atmosphere in rural surroundings, what more could you ask for? The only drawback is the location as it's a bit further than most like to travel, but the food more than makes up for the drive.
