The ViewNottingham Review
Tally Ho - makes you think of jodhpurs, Land Rovers and fox hunting. Nothing could be further from the truth at this pub.
The Venue
OK, to be fair the Tally Ho has pulled its socks up recently, but nowhere near enough to elevate it to a good standard. The bar area (with pool table, etc) is still a fairly dingy affair where the locals meet to drink lager and shoot pool.
The second section is now set out as a restaurant with a separate bar, this used to be just one big room to get tanked up in, so any change was bound to be an improvement.
There are a few tables and chairs at the front of the pub and it's not uncommon to see young mothers and their pushchairs (presumably with tots/babies in them) sat outside on a scorching summer's day. They have a huge car park which is, ironically, shared with the doctor's surgery next door.
The People
Bakersfield is a pretty nice area, and it's fair to say that some decent people wander through the doors of the Tally Ho from time to time. But the Tally Ho also attracts a rum bunch who are here quite regularly, and they're not always that welcoming.
You can find some dodgy characters in here, but there are some nice older people who have been drinking here for years and they help keep the atmosphere peaceful.
The Food and Drink
The food has improved the whole outlook on the Tally Ho. Whereas it used to be a shabby local pub, it's now a shabby local pub that serves half decent food. The Sunday lunches are good value as are the lunches throughout the week.
Some of it is fresh, some of it isn't. Word on the street is that people generally enjoy it and are glad of somewhere near to have a bite to eat.
Pints of Fosters, Stella, shorts of Bacardi and coke and the ever-popular alcopops are readily available, but they don't exactly have a unique selling point on the drinks list.
The Last Word
If you live near the Tally Ho and don’t feel like travelling, then it's worth a look. It's unlikely to be the best meal ever, but it will fill a gap.
